“Bathing Clogs: From The Traditional Turkish Bath to The Present” research and design project puts an effort on a transformation of traditional craft products to contemporary products by product design methods. Traditional bathing clogs are “the object” in this study which aims to design new generation bathing clogs for today, rooted from traditional Ottoman wooden bathing clogs. The target of this project is to research for traditional bathing clogs in terms of socio-cultural aspects, production (artisanship), function and cultural values and transform their design values into new bathing clogs.
Why does this study focus on bathing clogs?
I have found out that Ottoman bathing clogs (nalın) were original craft objects in the history, which had rich cultural values for design, are disappeared craft objects of design today in Turkey. As it is concluded in my article titled “From Clacking Clogs to Creaking Slippers”* that: new bathing clogs designs, rooted from the knowledge of nalın craftsmanship in the design history of Turkey can be created as a new specialized type of product for bathing facilities and a contribution to Contemporary Design Culture in Turkey. The aim of the research not only create theoretical investments, but also demonstrate prototypes in order to understand knowledge and design value of a traditional craft object can be reincarnated for the Traditional Turkish Bathing Culture of today through design thinking. This study based on research method called “research through practice” and continues from my previous new generation bathing clogs design concept, called Tak Tak which was presented in Stockholm and Saint Etienne in 2004.
